As children tend to wet and soil the bed during their sleep, it is important that their mattresses are cleaned frequently. This is to ensure that your child is sleeping in a safe and clean environment. Read on as we share our 5 tips with you on how to clean your baby mattress regularly.

1. Start with Choosing the Right Baby Mattress

Co-sleeping is a hot-button topic in parenting circles. It is often frown upon due to the fear of SIDS (Sudden Infant death syndrome). However here in Asia, it is common to have babies and children sleeping in the same bed as their parents. This practice could be driven by the parent’s preference, space limitation for a nursery or simply because that’s the best way that everyone gets to sleep peacefully. Whether you choose to co-sleep or have a separate nursery for your child, it is essential to choose a comfortable mattress for your baby.

Here are some key considerations to ensure that our little ones have a safe and comfortable spot.

Natural material - it is important to choose a natural and eco-friendly material, in order to prevent any toxic emissions from the mattress. Natural latex baby mattresses are a popular choice, as they are naturally resistant to dust mites and mould.

Ventilation - latex mattresses offer great air circulation as they are naturally breathable due to the structure. Temperature regulation is important for optimal sleep and sound sleep equals a healthier and happier child.

Support and durability - often people think that providing a soft and fluffy bed to a child is the right thing to do, however various researches has proven that it is important for infants to lie down on a firm mattress, providing support to their spine and tender posture.

Ease of cleaning - A big contributing factor when selecting a baby mattress is the ease of cleaning. Choosing a baby mattress with a water-resistant surface makes leaks and spills easier to clean.

2. Invest In A Waterproof Cover

If your mattress does not come with a water resistant surface, it is worthy to invest in a waterproof cover. As children tend to wet and soil the bed during their sleep, there is a tendency for the liquid to soak into the mattress core, creating the perfect environment for bacteria to grow, not to mention ugly yellow stains on the surface.

A waterproof cover helps protect the lifespan of your mattress, and eases your cleaning task!

3. Change Your Mattress Cover and Beddings Regularly

It is recommended to wash and replace your beddings at least once or twice a week. Your baby spends 8 - 10 hours sleeping on the bed, it is important to keep the environment clean and germ free. It is also a good idea to have at least 3 spare sets of bedding - one for the mattress, one in the wash, and one spare for middle of the night emergencies! Ideally, baby beddings should be washed with gentle laundry detergent, and hot water at 60°C to kill any germs.

The H2O Waterproof Baby Mattress Protector from genie by Getha is a popular choice among young parents. Made of premium delicate fabric, it is waterproof yet breathable. Comes with a fitted cover for your convenience.

4. Treat Stains and Odour

Using a mattress protector can help prevent some stains on your mattress, but some stains are inevitable. Over time, dust and dirt might leave mild stains and discolouration on your mattress.

The best tip is to treat the stains immediately when it happens - you can use a home remedy of vinegar, lemon juice and warm water. This mixture is a safe and organic solution to use on your child’s bed!

Combine 1 cup water, 1 cup white vinegar and ¼ cup of lemon juice in a spray bottle. Use the mist setting on the bottle to spray the area, spot clean the stains by gently scrubbing it with a micro fibre cloth.

5. Sanitize and Leave it to Air Dry

Washing, vacuuming and cleaning the baby mattress does not guarantee the removal of germs and bacteria. Using a baby-friendly disinfectant on the baby mattress, gives you the extra assurance. To apply the disinfectant, spray a fine mist directly on to the mattress and let it air-dry.

Getha’s Nano Antibacterial Spray is a good choice when it comes to disinfectant spray. It comes with a powerful natural antibiotic with a 99.9% germ killing effect. Nano-Silver also encourages a healthy environment with its deodorization and antifungal properties.
